The Past is Part of Us (Little Yellow Bicycle Just Because)

I'm having a great time getting vintage photos scrapped! I'm finding that I don't always need the story behind the photos (although that would certainly be nice). It's interesting enough to me to record family history and to trace the genealogy back a few generations. That information is in the polka dot envelope.

This is a picture of my paternal grandmother (at the age of 7) and one of her brothers. She had six siblings (three brothers and three sisters). Her parents (my great grandparents) immigrated to the U.S. from Russia and Austro-Hungary. Both were born in the mid-1870s. My great grandfather was a furrier and my great grandmother was a homemaker (that's what they called a stay-at-home mom in those days). If you look at the photo closely, you can see that my grandmother AND her brother both have bow-shaped garters holding up their socks. I thought that was really cool.

Always Will (Little Yellow Bicycle Just Because)

Yes, this is yours truly and my hubby on our wedding day 24 years ago. How did that happen?!?! :)

Little Yellow Bicycle's Just Because collection worked perfectly with these photos (Notice I said photos? I am usually a one photo scrapper so this is a change for me. See, I can work outside of my comfort zone. LOL!) I love how the pinks and reds complement the flowers, cake and my dress and the black and grey work well with Tom's tux and add in a little bit of a masculine touch on an otherwise feminine page. I added in some of Little Yellow Bicycle's new Naturals collection too (canvas alphas/numbers and clothespins).

I have loads more wedding pictures to scrap but I'm moving on to some vintage pics for now (and don't you dare say that these ARE vintage, LOL!)

Rukin Brothers (Bo Bunny Timepiece)

I seem to be on a bit of a vintage kick lately. Every time I go through my stash of old photos, something speaks to me and I feel the need to get it scrapped. This is a photo of my Dad (the older one) and his brother in 1948. I wish I knew why they were all dressed up. Although I knew my Dad liked hats as an adult, I didn't know he wore them as a kid. I guess it started early. I used all Bo Bunny Timepiece on here, with bits and pieces of newer product, like Little Yellow Bicycle's Naturals word clothespins and Studio Calico's wood veneer potty people.

On My Honor (Simple Stories Documented)

This is a photo of my Dad (back row, third from left) at about the age of seven, hanging out with his Boy Scout buddies. I don't know about you, but I like having photos like this to remind me that my parents were kids once too. This is all Simple Stories Documented with some red added in for a pop of color. The book page is from my Dad's Boy Scout Handbook.

Finicky Feline (Simple Stories Harvest Lane)

Please tell me we are not the only family with a prima donna cat. LOL! Alexa decided to make Butterscotch some fresh cat treats. She researched recipes online and narrowed it down to one she thought he'd like. She made up the dough (which included a can of tuna, mind you), rolled it out, cut it into little bite-size pieces and baked it. Butterscotch completely turned his nose up at these things and would not even try one. She tried and tried, but he wanted nothing to do with them. After a few days, I passed the (very full) container on to a friend to give to her cat (she said her cat would eat anything). Her cat wouldn't eat them either...but her dog did. :)

Hello 2013 (Simple Stories Snap)

I went a little crazy with color on this one but I couldn't resist all of the fun, vibrant colors in Simple Stories' Sn@p collection. I used number stickers around the page to represent a New Year's Eve countdown (5, 4, 3, 2, 1). Journaling about our New Year's Eve celebration is in the kraft envelope and the "hello 2013" card (bottom right corner) is a printable from Simple Stories that I shared on my blog last week.

Card Share: Away We Go Birthday (Simple Stories Yearography)

Yesterday was Tom's birthday (I'll bet you can't guess how old he is, LOL). I made him this card while I was at a crop last weekend. This is pretty much all Simple Stories Year.o.graphy (love this collection for guy cards/pages) with the addition of Little Yellow Bicycle's canvas numbers inked to match the blue in the patterned paper). There's a brown rub on heart on top of a blue brad inside of the "6". Sometimes it's hard to get rub ons to stick to metal. Rough up the area a bit with sandpaper and then the rub on transfers beautifully. Just a little tip for the day...

I added brads to the spokes on the bicycle wheels and put foam squares on the back of the sticker to add dimension.

Since the patterned paper already had a label on it, I used that spot for the sentiment.

A bit of machine stitching finished it all off. Now I just have to figure out how to stay away from the chocolate birthday cake left overs so I don't finish those off. :)

Card Share: You Make Me Smile (Little Yellow Bicycle Just Because)

Here's a quick card I put together at a crop I went to over the weekend. This is the newly released Just Because collection from Little Yellow Bicycle. I love the color palette of red, blue and tan with the shine of the silver. This collection works so well for love and friendship projects, but you could do patriotic pages with it as well.

Here's a close up of the chipboard "just because" piece. I added in some pearls as an accent.

Here's a look at the top left corner with the twill loop and one red pearl to create a visual triangle.

I hope someone makes you smile today. :)

Tasty Tuesday (on a Thursday): Crockpot Salsa Chicken

(Photo and recipe from Chef Mommy blog)

I came across this super easy recipe from the Chef Mommy blog on Pinterest. What makes it easy? It uses the crock pot! Nothing better than a fix it and forget it meal, right?

Definitely take the suggestion of adding beans, scallions and cheese. It brings this dish up a notch. We don't care for cilantro (gasp!) so I left that out. Make a side of (brown) rice and you've got a great meal (well, you'll need a veggie too). :)

Ingredients:

1 pound boneless skinless chicken breasts
1 can cream of mushroom or cream of chicken soup (I used cream of mushroom)
1 cup salsa
1 package taco seasoning (I used 1 Tbsp of my homemade taco seasoning)
1 cup sour cream
cilantro, for serving (optional)

(I also added a little shredded cheddar-jack, black beans and scallion on top)

Directions:

Put chicken, soup, and salsa in slow cooker. Sprinkle taco seasoning over everything. Cook on low for 6 hours. If shredding the chicken, pull the breasts out and shred; return back to slow cooker. Stir in sour cream and heat just until everything is combined.

She Is More Like a Sister (Little Yellow Bicycle Just Because)

We all probably can think of at least one friend we can count on no matter what. It usually stems from a friendship of long-standing and for me it's also about trust. This is what my dear friend, Francine, is to me. We've known each other for 28 years (I can't believe it!) and I can count on her for anything. She has always been there for me, through the good times and the bad. Four years ago, she showed up at my friend's funeral (even though she didn't know my friend except from my talking about her) to help me through it. She came for a surprise visit when we first moved to NY. Imagine my shock and surprise when I opened the front door and there she was! She has been there through both of my parents' deaths and countless other times. She is a rock and is more like a sister to me...

To celebrate this friendship, I used Little Yellow Bicycle's brand new Just Because collection. Isn't it pretty? The colors are amazing (although the lighter blues are a bit off because we have zero light today)! I layered some Clear Cuts to add to the scene already printed on the background paper (mason jar, "love", "let's chat" banner, and polka dot cloud). I also mixed and matched some chipboard hearts and frames, pop dotting them for added dimension.

Here are some detail shots:

Freebie Roundup

I've come across a few freebies recently that I thought were worth sharing. :)

The first is a set of printable Project Life-style flash cards from Simple Stories. They are designed to coordinate with their new Sn@p collection and are perfect for pages about the new year. I'm in the process of using the one below on a page about our New Year's Eve festivities.

This next one caught my eye because chalkboard backgrounds are a big trend right now. A blank chalkboard has so many possibilities, don't you think? I found this one on the How to Nest for Less blog

This blank canvas inspired me to create a new "Out for Publication" sign to use on my blog and in my online galleries. I imported the blank chalkboard file (it is sized as an 8x10) into Photoshop and then used free chalkboard-style fonts found on dafont.com.

.

The last freebie I have to share today is a digital page template from Fancy Pants. These designs are from their warm, cozy, winter-themed Hot Cocoa collection. This template is perfect to have on hand when you need to put together a quick and easy page.

Have you come across any fun freebies lately? Please share the link in your comment if you can. :)

My 5 Top CHA Product Picks

Santa makes his list and checks it twice, so why can't scrapbookers do the same thing? With all of last week's CHA sneak peeks coming fast and furious, I have a growing list of must haves. I'll share the top five today (but believe me, there are many more, LOL).

#1: Little Yellow Bicycle's new Naturals Collection includes these adorable cork, button and wooden word stick pins. Oh my! There's loads more that's part of this collection, including burlap and canvas flowers and alphabet stickers.

#2: Jillibean Soup's new Alphabeans letter stickers. A girl can NEVER have too many alphabet stickers. :) (Photo is too long to post. Click on the word "Alphabeans" to see more.)

#3: American Crafts' Lucky Charm Collection. So fresh and pretty! I'm hoping it will coordinate with last year's Deary Lizzy Neapolitan collection (which I loved).

#4: Carta Bella's Well Traveled Collection. Love the classic color scheme. I'm planning to use it with vintage photos.

#5: Little Yellow Bicycle's Just Because Collection. A great collection for every day or love/Valentine's Day.

So there are my top picks. What's at the top of your list?

Let's Branch Out (Little Yellow Bicycle Once Upon a Christmas)

I don't scrap about our tree every year, but once in a while I like to capture what it looked like and talk about any new ornaments we may have added. This year was a "big" year because Alexa decorated the tree all by herself for the first time (while I put out other holiday decor and Tom hung the wreaths). I think she did a great job!

Card Share: U R Just My Type (Jillibean Soup Sweet and Sour)

I'm back today with another Valentine's Day card, this time using Jillibean Soup's Sweet and Sour collection. I used a circle punch to punch the word "type" from one of the patterned papers and then pop-dotted the letters so they'd look a bit like typewriter keys.

Card Share: Be My Valentine (Fancy Pants Love Story)

With Valentine's Day approaching, I thought I'd share a love-themed card today. I don't make many cards for this holiday, but I do like to have a few on hand to give to Tom and Alexa (and a few selected others I love). :) I used Fancy Pants' Love Story collection, adding in a sweet Bella Blvd. flag, an SEI rub on flower, and some pretty pink pearls.

Believe? (Little Yellow Bicycle Once Upon a Christmas)

The 5 Things Pocket Page from Little Yellow Bicycle's Once Upon a Christmas collection made this page a snap to put together. Having pre-stitched pockets at the bottom of the page was an added bonus (because you all know how much I love the look of stitching on my pages). :)

This was the year Alexa questioned the existence of Santa (honestly, it was kind of a relief). She presented a handwritten index card to me at bedtime on Christmas Eve that said:

Dear Mom & Dad,

I hate to say this but I think you know very well that I'm a little bit too old to believe that a man can go around the world in 1 night w/8 magic reindeer pulling a sleigh. But at the same time it's not so fun growing up and not (almost) not wanting to believe! I'm confused! HELP!

Love, Alexa

Kind of heart breaking but so sweet (OK, bittersweet) at the same time, isn't it?

Festive and Frosted

I love to try new recipes, whether it be for a meal, side dish or dessert. I especially love to add a new baked good (or two) into my "standard" holiday menu. This year Alexa and I whipped up these yummy frosted gingerbread cookies. They have ground ginger and candied ginger in them (and they called for yogurt which made us believe they were healthy, LOL!)

Just like a recipe, this page is a mix of a number of different "ingredients" (manufacturers). The papers are mostly Echo Park (with a wee bit of October Afternoon thrown in) and the embellishments are a complete mish mosh of new and old, just bits and pieces I had in my embellishment box.

Do you try new recipes during the holidays or do you stick with the tried-and-true?

Making the Grades (Little Yellow Bicycle The Escape)

Scrapping school pictures is not at the top of my list. I'm never really in love with the picture itself because it never shows Alexa's "true" personality. I managed to procrastinate on this one since September. What inspired me to finally scrap it? Alexa received a post card in the mail congratulating her on making High Honor Roll with Distinction for the first quarter. I had an aha (!) moment and realized I could kill two birds with one stone by scrapping the school picture WITH the post card. Yes, that would work!

Turns out that Little Yellow Bicycle's Escape collection, paired with some of their Head of the Class stickers, did the trick. I added in some pearls and rhinestones to make it a bit more "girly".

How do you handle scrapping school pictures? If you have any examples to share, I'd love to see! :)

Holiday Houses (Simple Stories Handmade Holiday)

Every year we go to a gingerbread house exhibit at the George Eastman House. The houses are done by local families, scout troops, and professionals. Even though there were fewer pieces on display, there were still plenty of amazing creations like this replica of St. Peter's Basilica. We also saw a beautiful Victorian living room, complete with a twisted Twizzlers licorice banister accented with pearls. A Mouseville village complete with teapot-shaped houses was also at the top of the list. It's amazing what you can do with gingerbread!

Silly Ghouls (Simple Stories Snap)

Yes, I know we just celebrated Christmas and yes, I know New Year's Day is tomorrow but I'm a little behind and had to go back to October to scrapbook a Halloween picture. LOL! Alexa went trick-or-treating with a group of friends for the first time this year. One of the girl's dads followed close behind as he walked their dog so all was good. I was able to get this shot when they rang the bell at our house. :)

Card Share: Santa's Christmas List (Echo Park Holly Jolly)

Here's a fun and simple Christmas card I did using Echo Park's Holly Jolly collection. This card appeared in the December issue of CARDS magazine. Isn't that chipboard Santa the cutest?
